Holistic Health

Holistic health is another term for “whole health.”  It takes into account the “whole” person, one’s mental, emotional, spiritual and physical health and well being.  Those facets are not compartmentalized; they are very much intertwined with one another.  “Holistic medicine is based on the belief that the whole person is made up of interdependent parts and  if one part isn’t working well, all the other parts will be affected.”  (www.wedMD.com

Scripturally, I believe 1 Corinthians 12:26 sheds some light on the concept of holistic health.  “That there should be no schism in the body; but that the members should have the same care for one another.  And whether one member suffer, all the members suffer with it; or one member be honoured, all the members rejoice with it.”

Because our mental, emotional, spiritual, and physical health are so intertwined, when there is a “dis-ease” in any facet of one’s health, it doesn’t necessarily stay “contained” in that realm; any aspect of one’s health could inevitably be affected adversely.  For example, a physical malady may affect one’s mental or emotional state.  A spiritual issue of unforgiveness may drastically affect one’s physical health, and so on.

Elder Boyd K. Packer shared the following experience.  “I recently asked a doctor of family medicine how much of his time was devoted purely to correcting physical disorders.  He has a large practice, and after thoughtfully considering, he answered, ‘Not more than 20%.  The rest of the time I seem to be working on problems that very much affect the physical well-being of my patients but do not originate in the body.  These physical disorders,’ the doctor concluded, ‘are merely symptoms of some other kind of trouble.’”  Elder Packer added that “...there is a spirit in man; to ignore it is to ignore reality.  There are spiritual disorders, too, and spiritual diseases that can cause intense suffering.  The body and the spirit of man are bound together.  Often, very often, when there are disorders, it is very difficult to tell which is which.” (The Balm of Gilead)

If you are looking for a scientific explanation of holistic health, Penelope Quest shares that the field of psychoneuroimmunology has, “firmly established links between stress and almost every major disease, including arthritis, autoimmune disorders, cancer, diabetes, heart disease, hypertension, infertility, irritable bowel syndrome, peptic ulcers and strokes.” (Reiki for Life, p. 46)

Perhaps you have experienced something similar to what Dr. Bradley Nelson recounts here regarding symptoms, drugs, and underlying causes.  “There are many powerful drugs that can relieve symptoms of disease.  But when the drug wears off, the symptoms often return because the underlying causes of the disease have not been dealt with.” (The Emotion Code, p. 12)  That was the case with me multiple times over throughout my life.

When we experience “dis-ease” in one facet of health, we also need to be open-minded in looking at some of the other facets of health to discover the root cause.  In order to gain and maintain optimal health, we need to do our best to be aware of and take care of ALL facets of our health, with a holistic (whole) mindset.

My experience with holistic health:

In my early years, I was not aware of holistic health at all.  If I had a physical malady or sickness, I went to the doctor, was given medication, shots, or even underwent surgery (way more times than I care to recount).

It wasn’t until I met Dr. Timothy Francis in Las Vegas that I realized that most of my physical issues were symptoms of other underlying problems,  the vast majority of which were emotional.

I know for a fact that some of my physical health challenges throughout the years were directly related to my unwillingness to forgive others.  In fact, it almost killed me (literally) on at least two occasions.  Western medical doctors couldn’t do anything to “fix” what was wrong with me because there wasn’t anything physically wrong.  I needed to be willing to repent and forgive.  When I did so, my physical health drastically turned around for the better.  Sometimes I wonder how many doctor’s visits, antibiotic prescriptions and surgeries I may have been able to avoid, had I known about holistic health sooner or if I had been aware of and studied Boyd K. Packer’s talk, “The Balm of Gilead,” that was referenced earlier.  If I had been more aware of how my emotional and spiritual state were affecting my physical health, how much money would I have been able to save in medical bills?  Granted, there is definitely a place for Western medicine, and even for surgery on occasion; however, I know for a fact that I have been able to avoid at least three surgeries just in the last ten years because I was able to address the root causes holistically.

I know that I am much better off and feel much healthier as I address my health with a holistic mindset.  I am grateful for the knowledge I have gained and for the energy work modalities that have made such an impactful difference in my life.

For other scriptural examples of holistic health, you might look for instances of Christ’s healings where he mentions them being made “whole.”  For example, in Luke 8:48, Christ says to the woman with the issue of blood, “Daughter, be of good comfort (Greek meaning: courage, cheer): thy faith hath made thee whole; go in peace.” In addition to physical healing, Christ mentions being made “whole” as well as words like comfort and peace, possibly alluding to mental, emotional, and spiritual healing as well.

I also suggest reading the following stories in The Book of Mormon.

  • Lehi and Sariah in 1 Nephi 18:17-18 (emotional → physical)

  • Zeezrom in Alma 15:1-12 (spiritual and mental → physical)
